Indian PV developer Welspun Renewables has commissioned a 52MW solar power plant in the state of Maharashtra under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Located in Baramati, one of the regions of highest irradiance in the state, the plant will generate enough energy to power the equivalent of 240,000 homes.

Welspun set up the project on a PPP model with the utility Maharashtra State Power Generation Co. Ltd (Mahagenco). The power producer has been fully responsible for part-finance, design, and commissioning of the grid-connected plant.

Vineet Mittal, Welspun Renewables vice chairman, said: “The 52MW (DC) clean energy project is strengthening our partnership with the state of Maharashtra and advancement of the state’s utility-scale solar industry. This project is a testament of our commitment to furthering India’s clean energy mission.”

A Welspun statement said that it aims to commission 1GW of solar capacity in India this year.

Last month PV Tech reported that Trina Solar will partner with Welspun Renewables to build a 2GW module factory in India.
