Product Briefing Outline: a+f GmbH has introduced a new model within its SunCarrier series, the SunCarrier 120, which is a single-axis tracking system that permanently aligns the module surface with the current sun position via a vertical axis. This ensures an ideal angle of incidence for sunlight and provides an additional yield of 30% compared to fixed installations available on the market. Depending on the module type, an output of up to 24kWp can be installed on a module surface of around 120m2.

Problem: Due to its reduced height of only 4.3m, the system can be implemented easily in countries with installation height restrictions. The low height also results in a reduced wind load, enabling an increased focus on lightweight construction during the development stage and a significant weight reduction of the steel beam construction. Depending on the local requirements and the soil condition, customers can choose between concrete and screw-in foundations.

Solution: The required drive for the tracking is provided via a planetary gear (engine output of 0.37kW, with brake, drive ratio: 1:1,595, form-locked chain wheel on anchor chain). The power input amounts to 0.40kWh per day. A maintenance-free computer-assisted control has also been implemented. The control receives the signals from an electronic clock, an incremental encoder between the gear and the drive engine as well as mechanical feelers, enabling the system to ensure an accurate alignment with the current sun position.

Applications: Can be equipped with solar modules from most module manufacturers. The system is especially suited for deployment between the 25th and 55th northern and southern latitude lines, and can be installed individually or in large-scale solar parks.

Platform: The SunCarrier 120 is extremely robust and can withstand wind speeds of up to 121.3km/h according to the national UNI EN1991-1:2005-07 standard. It has a maximum rotating angle of 220° (June 21st) in summer and a minimum angle of 110° (December 21st) in winter.
