    On August 15, Tsumkwe, a small village in Northern Namibia, was able to receive its first, around-the-clock electricity supply in three years thanks to a hybrid solar system completed by juwi Solar. The 200kW system, consisting of a 1MW battery storage unit and three integrated diesel generators, is believed to be one of Africa’s largest off-grid solar systems and supplies Tsumkwe’s public buildings and 100 private households with electricity.

  • Sangri County in the Shannan Prefecture of Tibet

    The residents of the Tibetan Plateau will soon benefit from a 10MW solar photovoltaics installation currently under development by Suntech. Located in the Chek Kang village in Sangri County in the Shannan Prefecture of Tibet, the solar system, at approximately 4,000 meters above sea level, will be one of the highest on earth.

    Switzerland’s meeco Group will install an off-grid PV system on a cattle ranch in Paraguay. The 4kW system will help to offset increasing diesel prices in South America by generating 6,000 kWh of electricity a year for the Región Occidental-based ranch.

    Spanish solar panel manufacturer, Isofoton, has revealed plans to install solar power units at 300 schools in Rwanda, Africa. The project will cost the company around US$7.5 million.

    Kyocera has installed two of the world’s largest off-grid solar power systems in the Gobi Desert. The projects will see the remotely-situated Mongolian villages of Gobi-Altai and Bayantooroi serviced installations with a combined power 305.1kW.
