Austin Energy has inaugurated its 30MW solar plant in Webberville, Texas. The system, which went live on December 20, 2011, is the largest active solar project of any public power utility in the country and its opening ceremony was attended by Lee Leffingwell and Hector Gonzales, the mayors of Austin and Webberville. Over 127,000 modules, mounted on single-axis trackers, power the 380-acre site, which is expected to generate more than 61 million kWh of electricity in its first year of operation and 1.4 billion kWh over its 25-year lifespan. Austin Energy will purchase this electricity via a fixed-rate power purchase agreement.
