The term wafer is used to describe a sawn silicon panel, which forms the base component in the manufacture of a solar cell. The quality of the wafer is crucial for the effectiveness of the future solar cell; damaged and faulty wafers must be picked out. Jonas & Redmann designs, develops and manufactures systems for quality control and classification of raw wafers in close collaboration with well-known suppliers of inspection systems.
As a rule, the wafers in the manufacture chain for silicon solar cells also undergo wet chemical procedures. The wafers are cleaned in an etching bath, saw damage is eliminated and they are textured. Another treatment removes the phosphorus silicate glass, which is formed as a by-product of the diffusion process. These process steps can be carried out as inline or batch process. For this the wafers undergo wet chemical processes in a synthetic basin.
The positively charged wafers are handled in a diffusion furnace with phosphoric gas. At furnace temperatures of approx. 800-900°C phosphorus atoms are diffused into the waver's surface. Doping occurs and creates a negatively charged surface layer. The wafer then has two different layers: the negatively charged layer and below that the positively charged layer.
In this process step the future solar cells in the inline or batch process are coated with silicon nitride, which gives it its typical blue colour. The passivation of the surfaces and volumes of the silicon wafers means the performance of the solar cell is significantly increased.
At the end of the production process, the solar cells are sorted according to effectiveness and optical criteria. A variety of different measurement and inspection procedures are used for this. The results allow each cell to be assigned a specific performance level and quality category.
In order to make the manufacture of solar cells a competitive business, a high level of automation in the production plants is essential. Efficient, fully automated linking of the individual process steps helps to significantly increase the output per hour.
