Analog and mixed-signal semiconductor specialist Micrel Inc has said
that it has signed a long-term, multimillion dollar contract with an
unidentified customer to supply commercial concentrated solar cells
using its existing semiconductor fab, based in San Jose, California.
“As part of our global citizenship initiative and corporate responsibility programs, Micrel has long supported environmental preservation efforts on a global basis,” noted Guy Gandenberger, vice president of wafer fab and foundry operations, Micrel. “This new agreement enables Micrel to provide valuable energy-saving solutions while offsetting current capacity. This is yet another example of Micrel’s unique technological capability to provide leadership in emerging areas.”
Micrel has a 150mm fab with a capacity of 40,000 wafer starts per month (semiconductor) and operates a foundry service as well as catering for its own fabrication needs.
