Both Sanyo and Sharp are expected to invest strongly in solar cell
production expansions in 2008, according to various Japanese news
stories. Sanyo has seen static PV production in 2007 compared to 2006
due to polysilicon supply shortages, but plans to invest further in its
own polysilicon production while expanding solar cell capacity via a
new plant in Sakai, Japan.
Sharp will boost production of its thin-film silicon solar cells due to
the polysilicon shortages with expansion from 15MW to several hundred
MW, according to reports. Sharp has a capacity of 710MW at its
Katsuragi, Japan facility.
Reports vary as to the capital
expenditures required for the production expansions, with Sanyo’s
investments put at more than ¥1 billion and Sharp’s as much as ¥10
billion.
