Presently, Chile is among the first of the Latin American countries to implement a mixed energy model which includes renewable energy.

Act 20257, effective January 1, 2010, electric utilities with an installed capacity of over 200MW must obtain part of the energy they sell to customers from renewable energy resources – making up about 37% of Chile’s electricity generation. This Act has set a target of 5% renewable energy generation by 2014, to gradually rise to 10% by 2024.

Non-compliance earns a fine of US$25 per MWh, which then increases if a plant repeatedly fails to fulfil its obligations.
