Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute of Korea (ETRI) embarked on the development of next-generation thin-film solar cells in an attempt to prevent energy struggle in the future, the government-funded institute said.

A solar cell is a high-efficiency energy conversion device that changes the sunlight into electric energy. Despite low manufacturing cost, it can boast semi-permanent durability.

The solar energy market currently dominated by the 1st-generation crystal silicon solar cell which takes up over 90% of the market is suffering from shortage of silicon supply and 8-times higher cost of power generation than other energy sources such as coal, petroleum and gas.

Meanwhile, the 2nd-generation thin film solar cell composed of compound semiconductor is a low-cost, high-efficiency power generation system and has just entered the beginning stage of commercialization throughout the world.
