To meet a series of utility-scale PV projects in South Africa as part of the South African Department of Energy’s (DoE) Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), ABB is planning to open the new PV inverter production line at its existing facilities in Johannesburg in 2014.
The production is said to have a capacity of 500MW per annum and will build ABB’s PVS800 range of central inverters that include 630kW, 875kW and 1,000kW sizes.
“With this investment in a new production line, ABB further reinforces its position as a global renewables leader with attention to local market needs,” said Ulrich Spiesshofer, head of ABB’s Discrete Automation and Motion division. “The region’s energy needs are set to grow with economic expansion and with South Africa looking to benefit from its abundance of sunshine we will be in an even better position to serve our local customers.”
ABB has a South African pipeline of approximately 90MW from the two REIPPPP investment rounds. A third bidding round for around 400MW is expected this year.
