At its Solúcar Complex in Seville, Spain, Abengoa Solar has begun its commercial operation of Solnova 3, a parabolic trough technology plant. The plant marks the company’s ability to reach 143MW in commercial operation in addition to its 350MW under construction. The new plant generates 50MW of power at the new Solnova 3 solar station.
Solnova 3 employs around 984,252 square feet of mirrors that cover around 284 acres. It has incorporated parabolic trough technology and integrated design enhancements including the ASTRØ parabolic trough collector. The Solnova 3 has the same features as its predecessor, Solnova 1, which began operation at the beginning of May.
Solnova 3 uses technology that concentrates solar radiation onto a heat-absorbing pipe where liquid flows inside – reaching high temperatures. The fluid transfers its energies to the water vapor that reaches a turbo-generator, where it expands to produce electricity.
