Amtech Systems reported first fiscal quarter 2013 results last week that showed sales within its solar segment rising to US$4.3 million, up from US$2.8 million in the previous quarter.
The company had also announced a US$5.3 million order outside the quarterly reporting period.
However, before the new order, FY Q1 2013 solar segment new order intake shrank to just US$0.2 million solar, down from solar segment orders of US$2.1 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2012.
Total order backlog was US$14.7 million, down from US$18.7 million at September 30, 2012.
Solar segment order backlog stood at US$10.1 million, but included deferred revenue. This was down from US$13.8 million at September 30, 2012.
Amtech said that total revenue in the first fiscal quarter 2013 reached US$9.4 million with Asia-Pacific accounting for 54% of sales, Europe at 24% and North America at 22% of sales in the quarter.
The company reported a gross margin of 15%, compared to negative 63% sequentially and 29% in the first quarter of fiscal 2012.
Restructuring expenses in the quarter were US$700,000 due mainly to severance costs. R&D expenditures were reduced to US$1.2 million, down from US$3.9 million in the previous quarter.
The company retained total cash and cash equivalents of US$42.6 million at the end of the quarter. No guidance was given.
