CIS solar module manufacturer Avancis advised that its 30 x 30cm² fully encapsulated and framed Champion CIS solar module recorded a 15.8% aperture efficiency. The Avancis result was confirmed by TÜV Rheinland and comes six months after Solar Frontier released their in-house measurements of 17.2% aperture efficiency on its 30 x 30 cm CIS module. Solar Frontier did not advise that it had worked with a third party to confirm its measurements.
“The renewed efficiency improvement can be traced back to the reduction of the layer thickness of the CIGSSe absorber by approximately 10% and an optimized in-line selenization process for the thinner absorbers. In addition, the P1 laser structuring was optimized and the structuring process between P1, P2 and P3 improved with the aim of further enlarging the active surface. The result was the achievement of an aperture efficiency of 15.8 %,” stated Franz Karg, CTO of Avancis.
Avancis plans to present its findings Wednesday September 7 during an efficiency program lecture at EU PVSEC in Hamburg. The lecture will be titled, Towards Module Efficiencies of 16% with an Improved CIGSSe Device Design.
