HelioVolt has added two key executives to its Board of Directors,namely, E. Kenneth Pentimonti, Principal at Paladin Capital and RonaldD. Bernal (pictured), Partner at Sequel Venture Partners.  Both ofthese new Board members were recent contributors to HelioVolt’s recent$101 million fund.

Analog and mixed-signal semiconductor specialist Micrel Inc has saidthat it has signed a long-term, multimillion dollar contract with anunidentified customer to supply commercial concentrated solar cellsusing its existing semiconductor fab, based in San Jose, California.

China Sunergy is to supply Canadian Solar with a total volume of 25MWof solar cells for 2008. Under the Agreements, China Sunergy willsupply approximately 12MW and 13MW of solar cells to Canadian Solar inthe first and second half of the year respectively.

Family run and privately held Baccini S.p.A, a specialist equipment manufacturer in the field of crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic (PV) cells, has been acquired by Applied Materials for $330 million in cash. Baccini was founded in 1967 and is regarded as an innovator in automated material handling, especially in respect to ultra-thin solar wafers. The transaction is expected to close in early 2008, according to the companies.

Overholt has joined the Cleantech Americateam as CFO, reporting to company CEO Bill Barnes.  Overholt’s mostrecent position was as VP of Finance for Calpine Corporation, and hisnew role will see him oversee all corporate and finance activities aswell as mergers and acquisitions for the company.

Spire Corporation has received a multi-million dollar contract from Ryazan Metal Ceramics Instrumentation Plant Joint Stock Company of Ryazan in Russia to provide them with a turnkey 12MW module manufacturing line. This makes it the largest module producer in Russia, according to Spire.

ersol Solar Energy AG has opened its second 100MWp cell productionplant with an initial investment of €46 million. The first multi- andmonocrystalline silicon solar cells will leave the plant in Arnstadt,Germany in early 2008, the company said.

XinAo Group, a company with an energy- and engineering-related history of over 10 years, has become the latest new entrant to the solar market with plans to build a 500MW thin film large substrate plant in China, employing Applied Materials’ turnkey ‘SunFab’ equipment production line. A contract was signed on November 13, 2007.

Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD) has said that revenues from thecompany's solar business represented 89 percent of total revenues, or$41.9 million - a 33 percent sequential increase and a 76 percentincrease over the prior-year quarter. The demand was related to its‘UNI-SOLAR’ laminates, with strong international demand from customersin Italy and Germany as well as its U.S. domestic market, the companysaid.
