SunPower has said that it expects to have sufficient silicon to generate 250 megawatts or more of solar cell production in 2008 due to its use of a portfolio strategy that combines polysilicon, ingot and wafer procurement from a variety of suppliers under a variety of contract terms and durations.

LDK Solar, listed on the NYSE and based in Xinyu City, China hasstarted construction of a polysilicon production plant adjacent to itsmulticrystalline solar wafer facilities. The aggressive schedule set bythe company should see a production capacity of up to 6,000 metric tonsof polysilicon produced by the end of 2008 and 15,000 metric tons bythe end of 2009. The Company has also indicated that it plans tocommence volume production by the end of 2008.

SunPower has said that it has entered into long-term supply contracts with new solar entrant NorSun AS, which will see SunPower purchase silicon in ingot and potentially wafer form to the tune of up to two gigawatts of solar cell production. In return, NorSun will buy polysilicon from SunPower at fixed annual volumes and prices. NorSun will provide SunPower cash advance payments for the polysilicon under this agreement.

Overall revenues are expected to be flat, down 5 percent for Applied Materials' next financial quarter due to memory manufacturers' CapEx spending declining.  With little boost in spending coming from the major foundries, the ray of sunshine is coming from the company's thin-film solar equipment sales, according to Michael Splinter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Applied Materials.
