The Emirate of Dubai looks set to ramp up its target for renewable energy to 15% of the overall generation mix by 2030, from its current level of 5%.

Speaking at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi yesterday, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, head of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, announced a revised target to hit 7% renewables by 2020 and reaching the 15% figure 10 years later.

Al Tayer was participating in a panel discussion on the future of the UAE’s energy and sustainability. At the event, Al Tayer and his fellow panellists, including Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, the secretary general of Abu Dhabi’s government environment agency and Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, chairman of renewable investor and developer Masdar, covered topics including investment in renewables and the role of private enterprise. Masdar, which includes a PV manufacturing and research company backed by an Abu Dhabi government development agency, was host of the three-day summit.

DEWA recently announced a capacity increase of the planned Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park PV project from 100MW to 200MW. To this, Al Tayer yesterday added news that the department will launch a tender for a 500MW solar plant project, under the independent power producer (IPP) model. Bidding will open in 2016, Al Tayer said.

The 100MW capacity increase of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park came when two companies bidding together for the project, one from Saudi Arabia, the other from Spain, put forward an alternate proposal to the original 100MW plan tabled. The two companies, ACWA and TSK, put forward their 200MW plan at a quoted levelised cost of energy (LCOE) of 5.84869 USD cents per kWh.

In addition to the raised targets on renewables, Dubai is targeting a reduction in energy consumption of 30% by 2030.

According to reports, the summit’s final day was also marked with an announcement that the United Arab Emirates will release its overarching draft energy strategy to 2035 during this year. Local news reported that the UAE ministry of energy’s undersecretary, Dr Matar Al Neyadi made the announcement on Wednesday. Al Neyadi also said all energy stakeholders in the UAE had been drafted into a taskforce to put together the strategy.

When it comes to storage, the US market exceeded a gigawatt of advanced energy storage installations (weighted towards lithium ion) at 1.46 GW, more than the previous six years in total! An exponential growth rate could see the market hit 7.5 GW p.a. by 2025. The summit will provide a wealth of content around this vital piece in the US power puzzle, with sessions dedicated to explore how companies are making money from batteries, the latest chemistries and their applications as they apply to different use-cases. We ask how investors can match ESG criteria to batteries and we will bring case studies of successful deployment and project execution onto the stage to examine how you can ensure your own projects are successful.
