Elkem Solar’s new factory, which is based on environment-friendly production of metals and materials using principal products including silicon, solar cell silicon, alloys for the foundry industry, microsilica, carbon, was officially opened on the 21st August. The new plant will deliver high-purity metallurgical silicon to the solar power industry.
Elkem Solar Silicon is used in solar power cells capable of generating renewable energy for more than 30 years; this Kristiansand factory produces solar-grade silicon with one-quarter of the energy required by plants employing traditional technology.
Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit cut the ribbon at the official opening, other guests included the ministers of the environment and international development of trade and industry as well as politicians and members of the executive management boards of Elkem and Orkla.
