Renewable energy developer, Enel Green Power, has begun construction on a 36MW PV plant in Chile.
The project is Enel’s first PV venture into the solar energy abundant country, already having 90MW of wind energy installed and a further 99MW of wind in construction.
The ‘Diego de Almagro’ solar park, named after the popular solar project region in the Atacama Desert where it is located, is expected to generate 80GWh a year. The plant will use 225,000 thin-film modules provided from the 3sun PV panel factory in Italy, a joint venture between Enel Green Power, Sharp and STMicroelectronics
The project requires an estimated US$60 million in investment and has a 15-year power purchase agreement with the central interconnected grid (SIC).
Enel Green Power also has the 122MW 'Sol de Lila' and 50MW 'Proyecto Fotovoltaico Flor del Desierto' solar PV projects in its pipeline, both approved by the environmental authorities in Chile.
