The European Commission’s Becquerel Prize for technical and scientific advancement in the field of PV was awarded to Professor Gabriel Sala at the opening of EU PVSEC.
Prof Sala is director of the Department of Electronic Physics at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and has specialised in CPV technology for several decades.
He worked on a number of early prototypes for CPV including Ramón Areces (1980), MINER (1983), EUCLIDES (1995) and was the scientific lead in the world’s largest PV concentration power plant, EUCLIDES-TENERIFE in 1998.
He has also contributed to standardisation work in the field.
Prof. Sala thanked his peers and gave a brief presentation on the history and status of PV concentrator cells, illustrating current constraints and solutions.
