Hanwha Q CELLS is upgrading certain ‘standard’ production lines in Malaysia and its advanced line in Germany to PERC (Passivated Emitter Rear Cell) solar cell technology developed by Meyer Burger’s competence centre for coating technologies, Roth & Rau.
Meyer Burger said that Roth & Rau’s MAiA equipment had been selected by Hanwha Q CELLS with deliveries planned for late 2014 and the option for additional MAiA production systems to be delivered in early 2015.
Hanwha Q CELLS is currently expanding production at its main manufacturing plant in Malaysia and also increasing the efficiency of solar cells such as the Q.ANTUM series under the Q CELLS brand.
The MAiA processing platform undertakes the coating the rear side of the solar cell with aluminum oxide and a top layer of silicon nitride, which can be carried out in tandem with the anti-reflection coating of the front side of the cell in a single system.
PERC solar cell technology is one of the key talking points at EU PVSEC being held in Amsterdam this week. The technology is seen as one of the key technology upgrades expected to be broadly implemented by major PV manufacturers over the next two years to boost cell conversion efficiencies above 20% for high-volume production.
