As Evergreen Solar nears completion of its 80MW Phase 1 expansion of its Devens, Massachusetts PV plant making its proprietary ‘String Ribbon’ solar wafer technology, the company has announced Phase 2 expansion at the facility, which will double capacity to 160MW.
“Phase 1 of our Devens site is on schedule to open by mid 2008 and begin its ramp up to 80 MW of production in 2009,” said Richard M. Feldt, Evergreen Solar’s Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We expect to complete Phase 2 by early 2009 and it should be at its full 80 MW annual capacity by the end of 2009, bringing total site capacity to approximately 160 MW. With this expansion, we will have approximately 1000 employees in Massachusetts in 2009, triple our employee base today.”
The expansion project is expected to take nine months. Evergreen Solar is targeting 125MW production in 2008, a figure that includes its 33.3 percent stake in EverQ. The company said earlier this year that it had secured 100 percent of the polysilicon required to meet projections.
