First Solar Power India, a subsidiary of US-based PV firm First Solar, has connected two solar projects to the grid in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with respective capacities of 80MWac and 50MWac.

Together the two plants will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 227,500 Indian homes. They will include more than 1.4 million First Solar modules.

Electricity from the projects will be purchased by the Southern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh and The Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company under 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Sujoy Ghosh, First Solar’s country head for India, said: “After achieving a recent milestone of 1GW of PV solar capacity footprint in India, we are delighted to add 130MWac of utility-scale solar power to the grid, growing our portfolio of operational solar assets to a cumulative capacity of 150MWac.

“With the commissioning of these plants we have once again demonstrated our strong execution capabilities, and with First Solar’s module performance and reliability, the plants will provide the best possible return on investment.”

India recently surpassed 8GW of solar installations having installed 257MW in the month of July. IFC's Gaetan Tiberghien discusses financing for Indian solar in an interview with PV Tech today.
