Upon the completion of the German Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies’ (VDE) official factory inspection certification, First Solar modules manufactured in the company’s Frankfurt, Germany plant, qualify as “Made in the European Union” and for a 10% FiT premium in Italy. The certification was completed under guidelines that were set forth by the Italian government as part of its Conto Energia 4 FiT program, which looks to reward projects that use at least 60% local content with a 10% premium over normal FiT rates.
“This certification provides an added value to our customers in Italy by increasing the attractiveness of investments in commercial PV systems,” said Stephan Hansen, vice president of Sales for First Solar in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “It also validates our commitment to manufacturing in Europe, which remains one of our most important markets globally.”
First Solar, which stressed that most of its raw materials for its German production are found within the EU, is in the process of doubling its manufacturing capacity at its Frankfurt plant. Current plans have the facility projecting to have a yearly capacity of 500MW.
