FirstEnergy Solutions, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy, has executed a long-term agreement that will see it acquire the electric output from Maryland Solar’s 20MW Maryland Solar Farm for the next 20 years. FirstEnergy will additionally receive the renewable energy credits associated with the solar project, which is said, upon its completion, to be the largest solar facility in Maryland.
'The Maryland Solar Farm represents our largest solar power agreement to date and will continue to position FirstEnergy Solutions among the foremost renewable energy suppliers in the region,” said Donald Schneider, president of FirstEnergy Solutions. “FirstEnergy Solutions is proud to play a key role in the development of renewable energy across the country with more than 500MW of wind and solar power under long-term contracts.”
The US$70 million solar farm will be built across 250 acres of state-owned correctional facility land near Hagerstown. Construction is anticipated to begin by the end of the year, with completion slated for Q4 2012 and operation beginning in 2013.
