The prototype for a new lightweight solar cell module was displayed by Fuji Electric Systems Ltd. during the second International Photovoltaic Power Generation Expo. The Expo took place from February 25-27.
A new film-type amorphous solar cell named the F-WAVE, measuring 2m x 50cm and weighing in at 8kg/m2, is half the weight of a crystal Si-based solar cell module of the same size. It is intended for use on a large area, such as the roof of a factory, because the power generation efficiency of the solar module is 8%, half that of a crystalline Si-based cell. The cost for reinforcement work is also less than that of crystalline Si-based cells.
While the manufacturing of the new module took place at the Kumamoto plant, two additional factories are on their way by 2010, in order to enhance Fuji Electric Systems’ annual production capacity to 150MW.
