In the first report that combines the solar research resources of IHS and NPD Solarbuzz after the recent acquisition, IHS has used estimated recognised PV module shipments from leading suppliers to establish a first look at its top 10 rankings for 2014.
Unlike PV Tech’s recent top 10 ranking, which is based on overall PV module shipment guidance given by companies in their full financial year and includes shipments to in-house PV power plant projects, IHS does not recognise such shipments in its analysis and also takes shipments on a calendar year basis only.
According to the latest IHS rankings criteria, Trina Solar will become the leading PV supplier in 2014, demoting Yingli Green to second position.
Canadian Solar is ranked third, retaining the position held in 2013. IHS told PV Tech that it was using analytical methodologies developed by NPD Solarbuzz to calculate estimated recognised shipments, which in the same period last year had ranked Canadian Solar in fourth position, and Sharp Corporation in third.
However, later shipment adjustments made by Sharp resulted in Canadian Solar surpassing Sharp’s shipments in the calendar year by less than 50MW, IHS told PV Tech.
According to IHS, JA Solar is expected to be ranked fifth in 2014, gaining five positions from being ranked tenth in 2013 and is also the fastest growing company by shipments in 2014.
Sharp Corporation is one of the losers in the IHS rankings for 2014, dropping two positions to sixth, primarily due to slightly lower shipments than in the previous year.
ReneSola also loses one ranking position, coming in seventh position, despite strong shipment growth in 2014. Both First Solar and Hanwha SolarOne also drop one ranking position to eighth and ninth respectively.
However, there continues to be a major battle at the bottom of the top 10 ranking as IHS positions two companies, SunPower and Kyocera as too close a call at the moment to separate on estimated recognised shipments.
IHS noted that many of the top 10 ranked suppliers increased the quantity of PV modules shipped for internal solar projects in 2014, notably Trina Solar, Yingli Green, Jinko Solar, and JA Solar. Total unrecognised module shipments are expected to reach 1.4GW in 2014, according to IHS.
