With help from REC Solar and Gehrlicher Solar, IKEA will be installing approximately 10,000 solar panels across the rooftops of its Draper, Utah, New Haven Connecticut and Portland, Oregon stores. The three new installations will generate 3,156MWh of electricity per year and bring IKEA’s solar program to 23 store installations in the US.

The 1,013kW system at IKEA’s Draper store will utilize 4,311 solar panels across 127,000 square feet of rooftop space while the Portland site will see 2,072 panels generating 487.3kW across 62,500 square feet of the store’s rooftop. Both systems will be installed by REC Solar.

Gehrlicher Solar will install the New Haven project, which will be installed across 118,000 square feet of the store’s rooftop and have 3,920 panels generating 940.8kW of electricity.

IKEA will own and operate each of the PV systems, which are schedule to begin installation next year and reach completion by the spring.

“We are thrilled that the installation of solar panels at these three stores will continue our rollout of solar energy programs across the country,” said Mike Ward, president of IKEA US. “This initiative, part of the company’s never-ending list of sustainable activities, will lower the carbon intensity of the electric grid and the US carbon footprint of IKEA.”
