Another major Indian solar deal has been announced as a high-profile national government-led investment conference draws closer.
Essel Group, the conglomerate behind the Zee Media Corporation, has announced an INR4000 crore (US$644 million) investment in solar in Rajasthan.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) is similar to the 10GW agreement in place between the Rajasthan Government and Adani Enterprises. Adani also has an MoU with SunEdison to build a 4GW manufacturing facility. That agreement only goes as far as to say that the pair will undertake a feasibility study.
State-owned power company SJVN announced a 4.2GW solar park in Gujarat.
The surge in announcements coincides with the Re-Invest conference starting on 15 February, which is being led by India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The conference has top-level support and will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to Bridge to India, research by the organisers indicates that the industry currently has non-binding solar investment commitments of 166GW. Azure, Essel, Welspun SunEdison and First Solar are among the big hitters with multi-GW intentions.
