Ascent Solar has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with 'The Energy and Resource Institute' (TERI), based in New Delhi, India. Under the terms of the agreement, TERI will perform testing and performance evaluation of Ascent's flexible thin-film CIGS modules as well as looking at the feasibility of including these modules for TERI's flagship program 'Lighting a Billion Lives' (LaBL).

A recent new entrant in the solar inverter market, Finland-based Vacon has recently received orders for installations of over 100MW as well as several megawatts in Italy and Belgium. Vacon recently introduced its ‘8000 SOLAR’ inverter series for utility-scale PV plants after acquiring a small Spanish company that specializes in the design of solar energy inverters. Vacon is a global AC drives manufacturer.

A 1.02MWp commercial solar system using Solyndra’s CIGS panels has been completed by alwitra on a warehouse of Parts Europe, based in Konz, Germany. The system, according to Solyndra, is the largest in Germany that has yet used its technology and the second largest worldwide. The project covers 13,000 square metres of rooftop with Evalon waterproofing membrane and approximately 10,700 square metres of rooftop with more than 5400 Solyndra panels.

SunRun has been given an added commitment of tax equity from a partner of U.S. Bancorp for the construction of 1,900 residential solar installations. The partnership with U.S. Bancorp is a follow up to the previous contract it had with the company less than a year ago.

Nestled close to the Nevada border in Needles, California, NRG Energy was on hand with BrightSource Energy and California’s Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System facility in the Mojave Desert. NRG Solar had recently signed a letter of intent with BrightSource to construct, finance, own and operate the 392MW solar thermal project with a US$300 million investment over the next three years.

At the Delhi International Renewable Energy Conference (DIREC), Azure Power announced that it is investing US$40 million in the Indian state of Gujarat for the construction of a 15MW solar PV plant. The investment is being led by Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), a U.S. Government agency, which is devoted to helping U.S. businesses invest abroad and encourage economic development in new and emerging markets. Additional investors include IFC, World Bank group and India and Foundation Capital.

Concentrator photovoltaics developer SolFocus will partner with Vision Electro Mechanical to build the first commercial CPV power plant in Saudi Arabia. The initial project will be the initial project in a series of Saudi solar power stations planned by Vision (a subsidiary of Construction Projects Holding Co. [CPC]).

The U.S. Department of the Interior has approved what will be the largest solar energy project ever to be built on U.S. public lands. The Blythe Solar Power Project, which will use parabolic trough-based concentrated solar thermal technology, will produce up to 1GW of solar power once completed.

Andromeda PV, the wholly owned subsidiary of SunPower, has reportedly received a €200 million loan from BNP Paribas and Société Générale in order to construct the two solar photovoltaics plants at Montalto di Castro, Italy, which will together have a capacity of 51MW.
