California’s Fremont Recycling & Transfer Station is the first solar-powered material recovery and solid waste transfer facility in Alameda County thanks to the collaboration between Solar Power and BLT Enterprises. The 398kW solar PV system includes rooftop racking and parking shade structures, which are set to produce over 587,000kWh of electricity every year. Solar Power oversaw the design and construction of the solar project.

Acuity Technology Management completed an independent evaluation on EnviroMission’s Australian Solar Tower technology, valuing it at AUDS$60,000,000. The valuation includes the intellectual property, development rights and overall commerciality of the technology.

SunRun has published and submitted its new report, “The Impact of Local Permitting on the Cost of Solar Power” to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) per the DOE’s request for rough data on non-equipment solar costs. Per SunRun’s report, local governments can save US$1 billion over the next five years while making solar installations more affordable for 50% of American homes by fixing the inconsistency in local solar permitting and inspection processes.

Semiconductor capital equipment supplier Tegal and consultancy se2quel Partners have formed sequel Power, a new company focused on the development and operation of very large-scale solar photovoltaic-based utilities in the United States, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. At least 10 projects in the range of 750MW (DC) to 1.1GW (DC) are in various stages of negotiation, and all are located in high-insolation regions, according to company sources.

Three companies have had bids accepted to build the 50MW Ordos solar thermal power plant in China. GD Power Development, China Datang and China Guangdong Nuclear Solar Energy Development were the successful bidders.

Nur Energie has received an electricity generation license for its new solar power plant on the Greek island of Crete. The Crete Concentrated Solar Power plant is a joint venture between Nur Energie and Motor Oil Hellas.

South Korea-based OCI Company is set to enter into the LED market, after it announced the purchase of US$33.3 million worth of sapphire crystallization furnaces from GT Solar. The order will be included in GT Solar's backlog for its current Q4 FY11, which ends on April 2, 2011.

ESSE, the new joint venture between Sharp Solar Energy and Enel Green Power, has just finished work on its first PV plant. The 5MW ground-mounted system in the southern Italian town of Serragiumenta, has been fitted with Sharp tandem-junction amorphous-silicon thin-film modules and will generate about 7.5 million kWh a year.

Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES) has signed a 15-year power-purchase agreement to provide solar generated electricity for the poultry farmers Perdue. Construction is set to take place over the summer and be completed by September.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has revealed two new initiatives that promote tribal energy development and a better partnership between the DOE and tribal nations. U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu advised that up to US$10 million will become available this year for the DOE’s Tribal Energy Program, which will go towards the evaluation, development and deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects on tribal lands.
