Electronics manufacturer Sharp has reported a doubling of turnover in its solar division driven largely by the booming Japanese PV market.
First quarter results for 2013 revealed a jump in sales to ¥84.3 billion (US$846 million), around double the same period last year.
The company said huge growth in residential, industrial and “mega-solar” projects in Japan explained the figures.
The company said it had shipped 343MW in the first quarter, up from the 253MW it shipped in the same quarter last year.
Sharp said it would respond to soaring demand from Japan by bolstering its solar business.
“We will handle booming demand in the Japanese market, particularly for mega-solar power generation projects and residential use. Concurrently, we will reinforce the business in a broad supply chain that encompasses system design, construction, power generation and maintenance.”
The company has increased in shipment guidance for the year to 1.6 GW to 1.8GW.
