Jinko Solar is on the brink of opening a 120MW PV module factory in Cape Town, according to South Africa’s minister for trade and industry Rob Davies.
A statement on the department of trade and industry (DTI) website claimed that the 80 million Rand (US$7.5 million) facility was opening in response to the demand generated by the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Programme (REIPPP).
The DTI claims to have helped secure Jinko’s commitment through a number of measures including “reduction of red tape, facilitation and support on local content requirements”.
According to the DTI, Jinko Solar has 30% market share in South Africa.
Last week, Suntech confirmed plans to build a module facility in South Africa to serve as a hub for the region.
