The state of Kerala, India, plans to install 10,000 1kW rooftop systems, supported by over Rs. 80 crores (US$1.4 million) from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
Launched by Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Minister for New and Renewable Energy at the capital of Kerala, Tiruvanthapuram, the government states this is the biggest programme sanctioned to Kerala so far with an overall anticipated expenditure of over Rs. 175 crores (US$3.2 million).
Dr. Abdullah pledged the Ministry’s support for the second phase of the project aimed at reaching over 50,000 households with a subsidy support of over Rs. 200 crores. (US$3.7 million). Completion dates are yet to be announced by the MNRE.
The project has been sanctioned by MNRE under Solar Off-Grid Photovoltaic program of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).
