Lux Research’s latest report, Finding the Winning and Losing Companies in Printed, Flexible, and Organic Electronics, has rated technology developers in displays, OPVs, smart packaging, transparent conductive films and thin-film batteries to compile its list of some of the top companies in each category. Using its Lux Innovation Grid to reach each technology developer, Lux Research looked at the company’s technical value, business execution and maturity.
While Lux did not find any OPV or thin-film battery company to fall in its highest category, the “dominant” category, there were a few that reached the “High Potential” (high technical value, but low business execution) range, including Solarprint and Oxford Photovoltaics. Solicore and ITN Energy Systems led the thin-film batteries segment, with Lux advising that OPV and thin-film batteries face “technical and business challenges,” which inhibited them from reaching the “Dominant” marker.
“Successful projects require bringing together companies to support the three key areas of expertise: materials, equipment and devices,” said Jonathan Melnick, Lux Research analyst and the lead author of the report. “Few, if any, companies have best-in-class capabilities in all of these areas, so picking partners with care is an essential component of a successful strategy.”
