Demand for high-purity quartz products within the PV and semiconductor industry are behind plans to expand Momentive Performance Materials, quartz plant in Geesthacht, Germany. Expansions at other plants have already been announced this year. Momentive said the US$14 million investment was targeted at high-purity specialty fused quartz crucibles for monosilicon ingot production as well as for semiconductor wafers.
“We are committed to growing our specialty quartz manufacturing capabilities to meet the ongoing needs of our global customers in the industries we serve,” said Ray Kolberg, President, Quartz & Ceramics. “Global demand for high-purity quartz products continues to expand as the photovoltaic and semiconductor production increases, driven in turn by strong demand in these fast-growing markets.”
Momentive said the expansion would allow capacity for large diameter fused quartz crucibles to increase by approximately 100%.
The Geesthacht plant was said to employ 97 people with the expansion creating a further 25 full time jobs once the project is completed.
