Product Briefing Outline: Tornado IC is the horizontal washing machine designed by Neptun S.r.l in version IperClean, for advanced cleaning and drying of PV modules. Based on the Tornado HP for glass applications, the IC version features all Neptun’s standard benefits in terms of mechanical solidity and reliability, with an even greater use of stainless steel AISI 304, transmission by means of conical gears, easy maintenance, ergonomic control panel with touch screen and optional pre-washing, low-E device and polishing unit.

Problem: Cleaning of substrates and cover glass keep on being one of the most critical steps in the photovoltaic manufacturing process. Insufficiently cleaned or inaccurately dried glasses may not be identified immediately but reveal extremely harmful for the quality of the final product, compromising the lifetime and the efficiency of the solar module. At the same time, the substrates are delicate and require a careful handling during the washing process. Finally, environmental policies and tightening profit margins impose increasing attention to reduction of water consumption.

Solution: The system guarantees thorough but delicate washing and drying with 6 brushes and 4 or 6 air knives, for a max speed up to 12 m/min. Each pair of brushes, as well as the pre-washing and the rinsing section, has its own independent water circuit, which is fed with ultra-pure DI-water. At every stage, the water quality is kept strictly under control by a multi-stage filtration system with constant control of the conductivity and precise dosing of detergent (if required). The combination of filters, valves and tanks allows an extreme reduction of the ultra-pure water consumption. The ultra-pure water can be heated up to 70°C in each circuit of the washing section, for successful removal of all possibly present contaminating agents. The system is suitably sealed to avoid all possible problems due to release of vapour in the environment. In the drying section, the IperClean version ensures ultra-pure air for perfect drying of the glass within clean room standards up to IsoClass 4. This avoids the deposit of new contaminated particles on the perfectly cleaned glass and guarantees a faultless processing of the modules afterwards.

Applications: Glass cleaning, PV Module cleaning.

Platform: Tornado IC claims extremely low noise, remaining definitely below 80 dB even during the drying process.

Availability: Currently available.

The solar tracker market continues to mature at breakneck speed, with designs and component selections becoming ever-more complex in the pursuit of better project economics. But a more simplistic design could deliver a triple benefit of lower Capex, EPC and Opex costs. This webinar will set out the ideal single axis tracker design for utility-scale solar farms. The design leapfrogs from decades of experience, with a comprehensive understanding and attention to the three cost structures of Capex, EPC and Opx. Sun and Steel Solar has prototyped a single axis tracker designed to deliver up to US$0.03/W in real savings compared to existing single axis trackers on the market. That’s US$30 million for every gigawatt deployed.
