German solar association, BSW-Solar has said that the rapidly falling costs of photovoltaic systems could lead to new solar power plants built in Germany not requiring financial support mechanism to operate profitably in 2017, based on expected energy prices at that time. The trade association also noted that the prices of finished photovoltaic rooftop systems installed since 2006 have more than halved.

By 2020, according to BSW-Solar, sales of solar modules will at least triple from current levels. Global PV installations in 2010 reached approximately 17.5GW.

According to BSW-Solar, the average German retail price per kilowatt of power is currently around €2,400 however, five years earlier it stood at €5,000.
