Spanish developer Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) has installed nearly 100,000 solar panels at the 56MW Moree Solar Farm, which is currently under construction in New South Wales, Australia.

The AU$164 million (US$119 million) plant, located on 280 hectares, will supply 140,000MWh per year, the equivalent of powering 15,000 homes. When complete it will hold 222,880 polycrystalline panels, supplied by panel manufacturer JA Solar.

The plant uses a single-axis horizontal tracking system to follow the sun through the day.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) part-funded the project with a AU$102 million grant. Meanwhile the Clean Energy Finance Corporation provided AU$47 million in debt financing.

The project is expected to be complete by early 2016.

President and chief operating officer of JA Solar, Xie Jian, said: “We firmly believe that the launch of MSF will serve as a foundation for potential opportunities to co-operate on large-scale solar projects in Australia in the future.”
