Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) has begun construction of its 70MWp Moree Solar Farm in New South Wales, on track to be one of the largest solar farms in Australia.
FRV’s US$164 million project is receiving significant financial support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) in the amount of US$101 million. Once completed in 2016, the Moree Solar Farm should generate enough energy to power 15,000 average-sized homes.
For the first time in large-scale solar in Australia, the plant’s design uses a single-axis horizontal tracking system, allowing the panels to follow the sun as it moves throughout the day to maximise power output. Green Light Contractors will carry out the engineering, procurement, and construction of the project.
Speaking at the event, ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht, said: "The knowledge gained through the construction and operation of these power stations will help overcome first-mover disadvantage and allow large-scale solar play a greater role in Australia's electricity markets."
