High-technology equipment manufacturer Intevac has received an order for its ion implantation tool from tier-1 solar cell producer, according to the company.

Wendell Blonigan, Intevac's president and chief executive officer said, "This new order for a system configured with our ion implantation source technology demonstrates continued and meaningful progress in our Thin Film Equipment growth strategy. Securing this order from a Tier 1 solar cell manufacturer is an important milestone that validates the capability and value proposition of our implant technology for advanced solar cell manufacturing."

The order follows-on from Intervac recently announcing an order for its ‘MATRIX’ PVD system from a tier-1 solar cell producer.

Intevac won its first production tool order for its continuous flux ion source ‘ENERGi’ system from an unidentified Asia-based solar cell producer in 2013.

The company noted that the latest ion implant order was scheduled to be shipped the second half of 2016.

Recently, Amtech Systems and Applied Materials have exited the PV ion implant market, due to slow uptake and focus by major PV manufacturers on PERC cell technology upgrades.
