Nigeria’s science and technology minister has mooted plans for a national science park akin to America’s Silicon Valley to develop home-grown technologies including solar panels.
Professor Henshaw Ewa told a local press briefing that the envisaged facility would specialise in hi-tech industries such as PV and satellite technology.
Quoted in Nigeria’s Daily Times, Ewa said a particular focus for the park would be the development of a domestic solar panel manufacturing industry.
Nigeria suffers from regular electricity blackouts, and Ewa said locally manufactured PV equipment would help meet the need for adequate power in the country.
He said while he was not against the importation of solar panels, a national science park would provide jobs for Nigerians and enhance local technological knowhow.
