Schmid Group has received its first order for a ten-lane wet-chemical edge-isolation unit that also replaces the customers current laser edge isolation technology, providing lower manufacturing costs and increased wafer/cell conversion efficiencies, according to the equipment supplier. Schmid claims its wet chemical system is the only platform offering a throughput up to 7,600 wafers per hour.
According to Schmid, its wet-chemical edge-isolation unit is responsible for a cell efficiency gain of 0.2% over the substituted technology, resulting in an increase in marketable products by 4-5%. The ROI is claimed to be no more than three months for each line replaced, due to the lower production costs, compared to laser edge isolation processes.
Combined with its selective emitter technology, Schmid claims that efficiency gains of 0.5% for multicrystalline cells and up to 1% for monocrystalline cells.
