Portugal’s government has approved 180MW of solar PV projects without subsidy in the Alejanto region over a six-month period up to May 2016.

The Directorate General for Energy and Geology received 68 project applications in this period from September 2015.

There are now 2.3GW of solar either authorised or awaiting approval in Portugal. Of this, there are 35 project applications accounting for around 1.25GW, which are still in the licensing phase.

The lack of subsidies for these latest applications represents a change from previous strategies, which involved payments of more than €300/MWh (US$330/MWh), which were paid by consumers.
