Suniva has announced that it has supplied its PV modules for a rooftop installation with a difference. President Obama’s Marine One helicopter hangar, located in Quantico, Virginia, will be powered by a 120kW solar array installed by FLS Energy and equipped by 500 of Suniva’s ART-245 panels.

The approximately 150,000kWh of electricity generated by the system will reduce the site’s bills by around US$10,500 per annum and will go towards satisfaction of energy mandates set by the secretary of the Navy. This stipulates that at least 50% of the Navy’s energy needs be provided by alternative energy sources by 2020.

The system will also contribute two credits toward the LEED certification, which is a stamp required of all Department of the Navy Military Construction (DON MILCON) projects. The hangar building is also equipped with energy efficient lighting and a HVAC system, low flow fixtures and several other energy efficient features, which together provide the rest of the credits required to achieve LEED Silver Certification.
