Solyndra’s largest PV installation to date in the United States reached its completion on the rooftop of LPS Industries’ Moonachie, NJ, facility. The 704kW installation applied nearly 3,800 Solyndra solar panels for a potential total yearly electricity output of 825,000kWh. Solis Partners designed, engineered and installed the system with the new white “cool” roof system.
“Our goal with this project was to demonstrate LPS Industries’ commitment to conducting business in an environmentally responsible manner, but it had to make economic sense,” said Madeleine Robinson, CEO of LPS Industries. “Solis Partners specified the Solyndra panels with a new ‘cool roof,’ allowing us to generate the most energy possible from our roof while reducing our overall energy use. Our customers have been thrilled to hear of our decision. The system is up and running and we expect a strong return on our investment.”
Solyndra’s CIGS thin-film panels are primarily designed for use on commercial rooftops and employ cylindrical modules that absorb sunlight from a 360-degree PV surface.
Financing for the project was partially obtained through the PSE&G Solar Loan program, which will be repaid by solar renewable energy certificates.
“The Solyndra panels are very easy to install and we had all of the panels installed in 4 weeks,” said Jamie Hahn, managing director of Solis Partners. “The entire project was completed in just a few months which is very impressive for an installation of this size, and offered substantial installation savings for LPS over other types of solar panels.”
