Status: Completed

Size: 1MW

One of the few solar projects outside of the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) Programme, this 1MW PV project was completed at the end of October 2012 and, according to JinkoSolar, represents the first utility-scale off-grid PV system in the country.

The project is composed of a fully integrated turnkey PV system designed, engineered and constructed by Solea Renewables and equipped with 4,170 polycrystalline PV panels supplied by JinkoSolar. The PV system was set up in order to provide electricity to the chrome mine located in Limpopo province.

It is expected to generate around 1.8GWh of electricity every year which is expected to reduce the mine’s daytime dependency on diesel for up to 30 years.
