Spanish PV developer and operator Gestamp Solar have completed a 5MW PV installation at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan.
The facility was inaugurated in late December 2013 in an event that featured guests such as the governor of Puerto Rico Alejandro Garcia Padilla and Victor Suarez, the head of the Puerto Rican port authority.
It took eight months to construct the project and required US$20 million in investment.
The convention centre, currently the largest in the Caribbean, now features 17,000 solar panels over parking spaces and 2,000 panels on the roof of the building. The project is expected to generate 8,000MWh annually.
Construction of the facility created 125 jobs, while 25 permanent jobs have now been established to help maintain the installation.
