Status: Under Construction

Size: 400kW

The new US$1.2 billion San Francisco 49ers stadium in Santa Clara, which is currently under construction, is set to feature solar arrays with a peak capacity of 400kW.

As part of the development plans of the stadium, NRG Energy will install three solar array-covered bridges, a solar canopy above the green roof on the suite tower area of the stadium and solar panels over the 49ers training centre. The solar panels will be supplied by Sunpower.

The solar bridges, which will connect the main parking areas to the stadium, will be the first solar bridges to feature at an NFL stadium.

The arrays will have a total peak capacity of about 400kW and will provide enough power over the course of a year to offset the power consumed at the stadium during 49ers home games.

Construction began on the 68,500-seat football stadium last year and is due for completion in 2014.

The installation will help the US$1.2 billion stadium become the first professional football stadium to open with LEED certification.
