Solarcentury Africa, the joint venture formed by PV company Solarcentury and Johannesburg-based renewable energy developer Momentous Energy has won a contract to install a rooftop power plant at Waterfall Mall, Rustenburg, South Africa. The contract was awarded by Growthpoint, owner of the mall and the largest property company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
The installation is expected to cut the mall's energy costs significantly in the face of rising coal prices in South Africa. Waterfall Mall, in the Northwest Province, attracts nearly 700,000 shoppers per month. According to Solarcentury Africa, the 574Kwp installation will offset 928 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually and generate electricity equivalent to the requirements of 750 aversage-sized households. Solarcentury Africa, which was formed in July 2013, is expected to provide further installations on Growthpoint properties in the near future. The Waterfall Mall installation is Growthpoint's first PV power plant.
