Official figures have been released by the French Government showing that 719MW of PV installations were connected to the grid in 2010, tripling installations compared to the previous year. Combined installations from previous years means that France has surpassed the 1GW level last year. Total installations reached 1,025MW.

Installations approached 13,000, compared to 4,430 PV installations in 2009. Only 29 installations above 250 kW were registered and grid connected in 2010, providing 128MW, compared to 24 installations providing 33MW in 2009.

Ministry of Ecology, Sustainability, and Transport noted that the pace of connections has accelerated throughout the year and in almost all metropolitan areas.

Key regions, which accounted for half of the total installed based last year, included: Alpes-Cote d'Azur, Pays de la Loire, Rhone-Alpes and Languedoc-Roussillon.

The French Government has since put in place an annual 500MW cap.
